Day 1

Arrival into Buenos Aires

Upon arrival (flight not included), you’ll meet your Exeter Latin America driver and English-speaking guide just outside baggage claim (holding a sign with your name on it) for your private transfer to your accommodations. For a boutique property in the heart of Recoleta, our favorite is Hub Porteño, but we also love Park Hyatt Palacio Duhau nearby for a full-service luxury hotel. Your Exeter Latin America travel planner can help you pick the best option.

Day 2

Indulge in the Sights, Tastes and Sounds of Buenos Aires

The largest city and capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires is often known for its quintessential European architecture but maintains its own strong identity through its rich culture. A city full of creatives, Buenos Aires is constantly reinventing itself with its population of food lovers, fashionistas, designers, and party-goers. Known as porteños, the citizens of Buenos Aires live in various eclectic neighborhoods like Recoleta, Palermo, or San Telmo, each with their own vibes and energies.

You’ll start your walking tour with your guide this morning at Colón Theater. Beside the theater you’ll the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires. Throughout the year the Obelisco is often sporting different unique ‘outfits’ or designs for special occasions. Continuing on your tour you’ll visit the Plaza de Mayo Square which houses the the Cabildo, the Pink House and the old city council for a look into the governmental side of Buenos Aires.

Continuing south, you’ll walk through San Telmo, Buenos Aires’ oldest neighborhood that’s known for its extensive contemporary art museums. After some time to explore the galleries, you’ll head to La Boca for an explosion of color at its iconic “Caminito” and later, Puerto Madero, a much more modern and business oriented area of the city.

Your journey continues on in Barrio Norte where you’ll drive along the Avenue Del Libertador which is surrounded by luxurious mansions. You’ll also drive through Palermo which houses large green areas like the Woods, the Rose garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Botanical Garden. Finishing up your tour, you’ll stop in the Recoleta cemetery to see the resting places of notable Argentines like past presidents, Nobel prize winners, and even Eva Perón.

Known as Argentina’s most traditional cuisine, parrilla restaurants are a truly authentic way to get to know the culture and food of the country. Some of the best restaurants are away from the tourist areas of the city and are where the locals go. Today you’ll visit three different authentic local parrilla restaurants with tastings of food and wine at each, as well as a stop at a local ice cream shop or ‘heladeria’ to cap off the tour.

For a perfect evening of great food and cultural entertainment, tonight you’ll dine at the Tango Rojo at the Cabaret of the Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero. Here you’ll enjoy an intimate show featuring skilled dancers, vocalists, and musicians. (Dinner and transfers included)

Day 3

Rural History & Tradition

Today after breakfast, you’ll head out with your driver and guide to visit the beautiful colonial-style Estancia Bamba de Areco for a taste of the Pampa, home of the gauchos and the cattle industry for which Argentina is so well known. Dating back to 1830 when it existed as a post house between Buenos Aires and the northern part of the country, La Bamba was converted into an estancia in the early 20th century. The estancia is steeped in tradition and history, and today serves also as a luxury hotel. Here you’ll experience delicious cuisine and a high level of service while learning of the gaucho traditions and viewing the equestrian sports that make this estancia unique.

Day 4

Journey to Mendoza

Meet your driver and guide for your transfer to the airport for your flight to Mendoza. (Flight not included.)

Upon arrival (flight not included), you’ll meet your Exeter Latin America driver and English-speaking guide just outside baggage claim (holding a sign with your name on it) for your private transfer to Entre Cielos, a lovely boutique property ideally situated in the Lujan de Cuyo wine region just south of Mendoza city which gives you the combination of a stay overlooking vineyards but still able to pop into Mendoza for dinner one evening.

Another alternative is to either split your stay in Mendoza between Entre Cielos and The Vines, a beautiful property further away in the higher altitude Valle de Uco, or perhaps to even stay at The Vines your entire stay. Your Exeter Latin America travel planner can help you choose the best fit for you.

While in Mendoza, the largest wine producing region in Argentina known particularly for Malbec, you’ll have the opportunity to visit several wineries. As you can imagine, there are numerous options that can be combined together to create full days of winery visits, wine tasting and lunches and dinners in the various regions like Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco. Once your trip is confirmed, we can share with you a list of some of our favorite wineries and also suggest others based on any specific interests and preferences you may have. We’ll of course book all your visits in advance for you, with all the details listed on your final itinerary.

Day 5

Wine Tasting in Mendoza

Today you’ll have a few private tasting visits at wineries, including a lunch with wine pairing, which we’ll work with you to select based on your interests. Most visitors enjoy a mix of visits in Lujan de Cuyo, just south of the city of Mendoza, and Valle de Uco, a relatively newer, high altitude subregion that is further from the city and home to some of the region’s top winemakers.

Day 6

Culinary Concoctions Paired with Wine

Today you’ll have a few more private tasting visits at wineries, including a cooking class lunch with wine pairing. Once again, which we’ll work with you to select based on your interests.

Day 7

A Pinch of Salta

Meet your driver and guide for your transfer to the airport for your flight (not included) to Salta. There are nonstop flights (duration 1:40) specific days of the week, otherwise a connection via Buenos Aires is necessary.

Upon arrival (flight not included), you’ll meet your Exeter Latin America driver and English-speaking guide just outside baggage claim (holding a sign with your name on it) for your private transfer to your accommodations. For a stay just outside of Salta surrounded by nature and a more remote feel, we love House of Jasmines, but staying in town at Legado Mitico (sister to the Buenos Aires property) is also an option for those who prefer. (Pricing varies.)

Located in the green Lerma Valley, Salta is the capital of the province bearing the same name and the gateway to to the high altitude wine, stunning nature and colonial architecture of Argentina’s vast northwest region. There’s plenty to see and do in Salta and neighboring Jujuy and this requires a good bit of driving to truly enjoy, so we’ve organized this sample itinerary to help reduce backtracking. If you prefer to simply have one hotel in Salta for this part of your journey and don’t mind some extra driving, that is also an option.

Day 8

Tasting Torrontés in Cafayate

This morning after breakfast, you’ll head out with your guide to Quebrada de las Conchas to explore a uniquely natural side of Argentina with rock formations that date back more than 60 million years ago. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its intense red color brings visitors from all over the world. This journey is truly spectacular and you will find it impossible not to stop a few times along the way.

Continuing onto Cafayate, you’ll have a private tasting to sample the high altitude, fruity white varietal ‘torrontés’ for which the region is known. Then, you’ll spend tonight at Patios de Cafayate, set on the wine estate of El Esteco vineyard just outside of town.

Day 9

A Day of Culture & History

This morning after check-out and breakfast, you’lll head back to Salta. Upon arrival, you’ll have some free time for lunch.

The afternoon will be a private tour of this colonial gem, including Main Square and the surrounding historical buildings like the San Francisco Church, the San Bernardo Convent, and the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM). Within this museum, you’ll learn more about the Incan Sanctuaries within the Andes such as the one atop the Llullaillaco Volcano.

Overnight again at the beautiful House of Jasmines.

Day 10

Picturesque Salt Flats

Today you’ll begin your full-day and night excursion outside of Salta in the neighboring Jujuy province. The beginning of your trip will have you driving along the route of the Tren a las Nubes (“train to the clouds”), a long railroad that runs through the Andes from northwestern Argentina all the way to southern Chile. Along the route you’ll drive along mountain roads with views of seemingly infinite desert plains and blue skies. Keep an eye out for small sections of humbles houses and pre-Hispanic ruins.

Along the way, you’ll have stops at various locations like the town of Campo Quijano and the impressive Quebrada del Toro gorge through which the Tren de las Nubes also passes. Here you’ll have a stop for some local coffee while taking in the incredible views, before continuing on to Santa Rosa de Tastil, a small pre-Incan settlement (13th century), and San Antonio de los Cobres, one of the smallest villages in the region. With your main stop at Salinas Grandes salt flats, you’ll have ample time to enjoy the surroundings and try your hand at some of the unique photos that can be taken here thanks to the landscape and reflections from the thin layer of water that covers the ground.

Day 11

Until next time!

Meet your driver and guide for your transfer to the Salta airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires and then onward to the U.S. (Flights not included.)
