Kempinski opens Havana’s first five-star hotelOur Magazine

With the opening of Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski in Havana this summer, we are thrilled to now offer an international five-star hotel as an option on of any custom, private trip to Cuba.  This is another option for upscale accommodations in Cuba, in addition to our network of deluxe private villas and apartments.

Our founder Joe Sandillo had an exclusive hardhat tour of the property in March and below we give you our sneak peek starting with some photos courtesy of Kempinski.  (Although the hotel is slated to open June 1, we prefer to give any new hotel a little time after opening to fine-tune their operations for the best possible stay, so we recommend planning one of our Havana itineraries for late summer onward.)

For the first true luxury hotel in Havana, Kempinski couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful or well-located venue.  Manzana de Gomez was completed in 1917 as Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade right in the heart of Havana, just steps from the Art Deco Bacardi building, the Capitol, and the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso.  From what we saw during our visit, Kempinski has done a splendid job restoring the classic structure to its former glory while still meeting the expectations of a 21st century luxury hotel.

In the 246 rooms and suites ranging from 430 to 1615 square feet, guests will find a clean white color palette with bright splashes of color, for a perfect blend of contemporary design with vibrant color of Cuba.  One of our favorite aspects of the hotel are the high ceilings in the guest rooms on every floor, making even the Patio and Deluxe category rooms feel more spacious than their 430 square feet!  Another element we love is that the lobby and 5 of the hotel’s restaurants and bars are located on the 2nd floor, which will provide a nice separation from the hustle and bustle of the street level entrance.

For those seeking more space or impressive views of the Capitol and surrounding landmarks, there are 23 Junior Suites and 27 Suites of various combinations and our team can help pick the right fit for you.  The Family Suites are excellent to accommodate up to 4 people together, and the Esquina Suites are located at the four corners of the building for unforgettable views.

In terms of amenities, the hotel offers everything you’d expect of a five-star luxury hotel including a massive spa with natural light, a rooftop pool and restaurant, international and Cuban restaurants, and of course, a cigar bar!
